We help dogs in Bequia live happy and healthy lives
The Chappy House started in 2022 with the aim of rehabilitating and rehoming island dogs in Bequia.
We provide shelter, adoption, medication, spay and neuter, and community outreach to inspire the community to value animals and treat them with respect and kindness.
Why we do what we do
Anyone who's been to Bequia will know the island dogs form a huge part of the community and island experience. They'll join you on a stroll around Port Elizabeth, guide you down the Belmont Walkway, and even spend the day on the beach with you—if you're lucky.
However, these generous and loyal pups don't always get the love and support they need to survive.
Through our different programs, including feeding, rescue and rehabilitation, medication, and steralization, we give Bequia dogs the chance to live happier and healthier lives, whether that be on island or finding them homes abroad.
Meet the team
Keon aka WuFang or Paw Daddy
Head of Dog Stuff
Bequia-born Keon has always had a soft-spot for animals. He is responsible for providing round-the-clock care for the majority of the pups we rescue, preparing meals for 20+ dogs daily, taking them for walks, and maintaining The Chappy House building and grounds.
We're lucky to have Keon, who has been affectionately nicknamed Paw Daddy, because without him, our work would be near-impossible.
When he's not at The Chappy House, you'll find Keon behind the bar at The Fragipani or on the basketball court.
Ngaere
Founder
Originally from New Jersey, Ngaere and her family have visited and had homes in Bequia since she was a child. In 2017, she decided to make Bequia her permanent home, before establishing The Chappy House.
Ngaere cares deeply about the animals of Bequia, and dedicates a huge part of her life to helping them. You'll often see her feeding animals around the island or accompanying dogs on the ferry to St Vincent to receive treatment they can't get in Bequia.
Thanks to Ngaere's vision, more Bequia dogs can now access the care they need.
In memory of Chapman
The inspiration for The Chappy House
Chapman 'Chappy' Durling, the late brother of our founder, Ngaere, is the inspiration behind The Chappy House name. Chapman visited Bequia frequently since he was a child and loved both the island and its 4-legged inhabitants.
So, now, we continue spreading positivity and doing good deeds in his name, by supporting two things he cherished in life.
